DESFA data on natural gas consumption for the first nine months of 2025

Posted on October 8, 2025

  • Significant increase in total natural gas demand by 16.66% compared to the first 9 months of 2024.
  • Surge in exports that rose to 5.06 TWh from just 0.66 TWh last year (+667%).
  • LNG strengthened its role in the energy mix covering over 40% of total gas imports, while imports through Sidirokastro decreased by 3.3% compared to 9M2025.
  • The number of LNG carriers received at Revithoussa more than doubled compared to last year, with LNG volumes recording an 81% increase.
  • Strong growth of the LNG Truck Loading service, with loadings tripling compared to 9M 2024.

Athens, October 8, 2025 – According to DESFA’s data for the first 9 months of 2025, total natural gas demand in Greece, including exports, reached 56.36 TWh, up by 16.66% compared to 48.31 TWh in the corresponding period of 2024. This significant increase was mainly driven by the surge in exports, which amounted to 5.06 TWh, from just 0.66 TWh in 2024, marking an increase of more than +660%, as well as the increase in domestic gas consumption by 7.66%, reaching 51,3 TWh, compared to 47,65 TWh last year.

In terms of consumer categories, power generation continues to be the main consumer, covering 71% of total domestic gas consumption with 36,45 TWh. Consumption through distribution networks increased by 18.05% to 9,42 TWh, representing 18% of domestic gas consumption, while consumption by industrial consumers and CNG stations amounted to 5,43 TWh, recording a decline of 16.97%, and representing 11% of domestic gas consumption.

Regarding imports, LNG’s role was significantly strengthened, covering over 40% of total gas imports compared to approx. 26% in the first nine months of 2024, with Agia Triada (Revithoussa) being the key entry point and Amphitrite (FSRU Alexandroupolis) following. Despite the fact the Revithoussa remained offline for scheduled maintenance works between 22/5-11/5, the Terminal covered 39% of the country’s total gas imports, receiving 36 LNG carriers, more than double compared to 17 carriers during the same period of 2024. The volumes unloaded amounted to 22.41 TWh, increased by 81.60% compared to 12.34 TWh in 2024. Through Amphitrite (the Alexandroupolis FSRU), a total of 1.03 TWh of LNG was imported until 22/1 when regasification services at the Station became temporarily unavailable.

The United States of America was the main LNG supplier, with volumes reaching 19.62 TWh (88% of the total), compared to 8.02 TWh last year. It was followed by Nigeria with 1.37 TWh, Norway with 0.93 TWh, and Algeria with 0.49 TWh.

As regards pipeline imports, Sidirokastro recorded 25.46 TWh, covering 45% of the country’s total gas imports, down by 3.3% compared to last year (26.32 TWh), while through Nea Mesimvria (TAP interconnection) imports reached 8.2 TWh, compared to 9.61 TWh in 2024, recording a decrease of 14.67%.

Finally, DESFA’s LNG Truck Loading service at the Revithoussa Terminal recorded a strong growth, with 494 LNG trucks loaded in the first nine months of 2025 compared to 174 trucks last year, and 148.05 GWh transported in the same period versus 51.28 GWh in 2024, marking a threefold increase. This dynamic growth confirms that the service is recognized as a flexible and efficient solution for covering the energy needs of remote distribution networks and industrial consumers in Greece and the wider region.

DESFA’s infrastructure continues to play a key role in diversifying natural gas supply sources and enhancing security of supply, in line with European and national energy policy.
