Posted on December 22, 2025

Athens, December 22, DESFA and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) signed a cooperation agreement on Tuesday, 16 December, for the establishment, organization and funding of the new Professional Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program with the title “Energy Systems and Sustainability.” The agreement was signed by DESFA’s CEO, Maria Rita Galli, and NTUA Rector, Ioannis Chatjigeorgiou.

According to the agreement, DESFA undertakes the full funding of the Program for a period of five (5) academic years, from academic year 2026–2027 to 2030–2031, covering all operational, educational, and organizational expenses of the Program.

The Program is addressed to graduates of Schools of Engineering and other Science-related faculties who possess foundational knowledge and a strong interest in energy technologies, sustainability and innovation, offering a well-balanced education that integrates theory, technology, and management.

The Program focuses on modern energy technologies, sustainability and the energy transition, with particular emphasis on renewable gases, such as hydrogen and biomethane, as well as synthetic fuels. It aims to strengthen expertise in their production, storage, transportation and utilization, within the framework of the circular economy and decarbonization.

The total number of admissions per academic year will not exceed thirty-seven (37), and the Program will be offered tuition-free, thereby making a substantial contribution to the development of a new generation of highly qualified professionals who will play a key role in the transition toward a sustainable energy future.

DESFA’s CEO, Maria Rita Galli, stated: We are particularly pleased to be collaborating with the National Technical University of Athens on the creation of the Postgraduate Program “Energy Systems and Sustainability,” a partnership that reflects DESFA’s steadfast commitment to investing in knowledge, innovation, and human capital. At a time of profound transformation in the energy sector, the education of specialized scientists with a holistic understanding of energy systems and sustainability is critical to the development of viable energy solutions and the successful energy transition. Through this collaboration, we aspire to make a meaningful contribution to shaping the next generation of professionals who will lead the energy sector toward a more sustainable and resilient future. I would like to warmly thank the Rector, Prof. Ioannis Chatjigeorgiou, and the academic staff of NTUA, as well as the people of DESFA who contributed to the development of the program’s structure and the design of its courses. I wish this initiative every success and hope it marks the first step in a series of fruitful and successful collaborations.”

Referring to the collaboration between the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and DESFA for the creation of the Postgraduate Study Program “Energy Systems and Sustainability,” the Rector of NTUA, Professor Ioannis Chatjigeorgiou, notes:

“The National Technical University of Athens places sustainable development at the core of its operation and strategy. The partnership with DESFA, one of the most significant energy groups in the country, which plays a decisive role in strengthening energy security and diversifying supply sources while at the same time highlighting Greece as an energy gateway to Europe, constitutes an extremely important step toward green development and innovation in the field of energy management. This collaboration reflects NTUA’s steadfast commitment to educating highly specialized scientists with advanced expertise and a strong sense of social responsibility. Our goal is a Technical University that is open to society, outward-looking, and oriented toward the creation of strategic synergies with distinguished institutions that share a common vision of excellence, support for the younger generation, sustainable development, and technological leadership. Through such initiatives, NTUA seeks to generate substantial added value for the Greek economy and society, contributing systematically to the shaping of a more sustainable and greener future for the country.”
