The Natural Gas Trading Platform of the Hellenic Energy Exchange officially started its operation today, March 21, 2022, marking an important milestone for the Greek energy market. It is the first time anonymous transactions of natural gas are allowed in the Greek system for the benefit of all market stakeholders.
The launch of the Trading Platform was completely successful without presenting any issue at a technical level. Eleven (11) participants were registered at the Trading Platform, while new participants are expected to be introduced in the next period with the completion of their registration process. The total volume of transactions carried out was 1,101 MWh. The adaptation of the participants to the trading rules was fast and substantial, a factor that foreshadows the successful course of the new trading platform.
Its operation offers multiple benefits, most importantly price discovery, helping market participants to optimize supply conditions for the benefit of consumers and overall enhancing security of supply. At the same time, it promotes interconnectivity in the energy market of South East Europe and enhances market liquidity in the wider region.
It also serves as a key tool on the road to the next level of the gas market, with the future integration of renewable gases and other innovative products into the wholesale market.
