- An increase in domestic gas consumption of 29.76% was recorded during the first half of 2024.
- A significant rise in natural gas consumption was observed in both industries and CNG consumers (+141.36%), as well as among power producers (+30.92%).
- Sidirokastro was the main entry gate for natural gas during this period, accounting for 50.76% of imports.
- The share of natural gas imports through the Revithoussa LNG Terminal remained high, covering almost a third (29.74%) of the total natural gas imports, with the USA being the country's main source of LNG supply, contributing 67.96% of total LNG imports.
An increasing trend in domestic natural gas consumption was recorded according to DESFA’s data for the first half of 2024. Sidirokastro entry point was the primary natural gas import gateway of the country during this period, followed by the Revithoussa LNG Terminal (Agia Triada entry point), which covered almost a third (29.74%) of the total natural gas imports.
According to DESFA’s data, during the first half of 2024, the domestic consumption of natural gas increased by 29.76%, reaching 30.78 Terawatt hours (TWh), comparing to 23.72 TWh in the corresponding period last year. On the contrary, the total demand for natural gas is recorded slightly reduced by 7.14% due to the decrease in exports.
Natural gas imports amounted to 30.93 TWh, registering a slight decrease of 8.14% compared to 33.67 TWh in the first half of 2023. The largest quantities entered through Sidirokastro entry point (15.7 TWh), covering 50.76% of imports. The contribution of the Revithoussa LNG Terminal remained significant, covering 29.74% of total natural gas imports with 9.2 TWh, while the entry point of Nea Mesimvria, through the TAP pipeline, covered 19.52% (6.03 TWh).
Regarding LNG imports at the Revithoussa Terminal during the period January-June 2024, they concerned about 8.96 TWh from 12 LNG carriers, compared to approximately 17.3 TWh from 26 carriers in the corresponding period of the previous year. 67.97% of the total LNG imports came from the USA, contributing 6.09 TWh. Imports from Russia followed in second place (1.91 TWh), with Algeria and Norway each contributing 0.48 TWh. Additionally, since the start of the LNG Truck Loading service operation in November 2023, which offers a flexible solution for transporting significant quantities of LNG to off-grid areas and users by road, 104 LNG trucks have been loaded, transferring 4,675.00 m³ of LNG or 30,139 MWh of equivalent energy.
In terms of natural gas consumer categories, power producers continue to record the highest consumption, covering 63.97% of domestic demand with 19.69 TWh out of a total consumption of 30.78 TWh. Natural gas consumption by industries and CNG vehicle refueling stations, directly connected to the NNGTS, saw a significant increase of 141.36% compared to the first half of 2023, amounting to 4.61 TWh, equivalent to nearly 14.97% of domestic demand. Consumption from distribution networks during the first half of 2024 reached 6.48 TWh, covering 21.05% of the total demand.
DESFA's infrastructure contributed substantially to the diversification of natural gas supply sources and to the strengthening of the security of supply. The liberalization of the energy market and the regulated Third-Party Access TPA, under which DESFA provides access to the NNGS, strengthens competition among natural gas suppliers for the benefit of end consumers. Third Party Access (TPA) is governed by the provisions of European Union and national law, ensuring open access to any interested party.
