Greece’s total CO2 emissions, which amounted approximately 51 Mt for 2022, must be significantly reduced by 2050 to meet the EU’s Net Zero goals.
The “electrification” of various sectors of the economy, combined with renewable fuels and increased energy efficiency form the backbone of global decarbonisation. However, these alone, even in combination, cannot bring netemissions to zero, while at the same time they do not find technical and economic application in all sectors, such as heavy industry including among others cement production, chemicals and refineries.
With carbon emission prices rising, with a significant further increase predicted after 2028, several major polluters in Greece see Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS) as one of the most promising solutions for reducing industrial carbon emissions.
