DESFA obtains the Gold Standard for 2021

Posted on November 1, 2021

In the framework of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

DESFA obtained the “Gold Standard” acknowledgement for the year 2021, within the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) framework of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This recognition refers both to the highest levels of monitoring and reporting of methane emissions of a company, as well as to the roadmap it has established to achieve its goals for the reduction of methane emissions and is awarded to companies that exhibit a credible and explicit path toward the highest methane emission monitoring and reporting levels.

Being one of the initial members of OGMP 2.0, the only comprehensive measurement-based reporting framework for the sector and aiming at maintaining the “Gold Standard” acknowledgement, DESFA continually elaborates methane emissions reporting based on measurements, specific emission factors and engineering calculations. To that end, DESFA has set an absolute target of a 20% methane emissions reduction from the company’s activities until 2025, in relation to the base year 2015.

UNEP, supported from the European Union, launched the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) at the G20 Summit, on the eve of the latest round of climate talks known as COP26 in Glasgow, to drive action on reducing the emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Critical to IMEO’s effort are data collected through OGMP 2.0, launched in November 2020 in the framework of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition of UNEP. OGMP 2.0 is a methane emissions measurement-based reporting framework for the oil and gas sector, and its 74 member companies represent many of the world’s largest operators across the entire value chain, with assets that account for over 30% of all oil and gas production.

DESFA’s actions on methane emissions reduction are in line with the company’s Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Management System, in the context of DESFA’s commitment to make a decisive contribution to achieving the national goals for decarbonisation, on the way to climate neutrality.
